Jonathan started training in stage combat in 1992, and has been a member of the SAFD since 2000. He currently trains in Jujitsu, Aikido and Karate concurrently at the Salem Budokai. He holds a black belt in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, a brown belt in Aikido and intermediate rank in two styles of Judo. He has cross trained in Modern Arnis (under Bram Frank), Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kali, Jodo, Tanto Jitsu, Hojo Jitsu, Aikiken, Aikibo, western wrestling and boxing, and tactical handgun strategy and technique.

Jonathan holds bachelor's degrees in Theatre and in Music; a master's degree in Acting Pedagogy and a Ph.D. in Directing Pedagogy. He is an Assistant Professor at Willamette University, where he teaches Directing, Theatre History, Stage Combat, Jujitsu, Aikido and Acting. He also helps out as an instructor in Jujitsu, Aikido, Judo and Karate at the Salem Budokai. He has choreographed violence for well over thirty productions at universities and professional theatres throughout the midwest and northwest.
