Richard is a free lance director and fight director with over 25 years experience. As a director, Richard spent three seasons as the artistic director of New American Theater, where his work was hailed as "a triumph" by the Chicago Tribune.

As a fight director, Richard has staged violence for the Guthrie Theatre, the Roundabout Theatre, the Alabama and Colorado Shakespeare Festivals, the American Players Theater, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and Chicago Shakespeare. On television he has choreographed fights for All My Children, One Life to Live, The Guiding Light and Loving.

Richard has taught the art of stage combat at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Wisconsin (at both Madison and Milwaukee), the University of Alabama and at 11 SAFD National Stage Combat Workshops.

Richard was the secretary & treasurer of the SAFD for five years, associate editor of the Fight Master and Cutting Edge, NSCW coordinator for two years and was honored with the Patrick Crean Award for service to the SAFD in 1994.
