The SAFD has established and maintains high standards of training and education. Qualified members are granted certification to teach stage combat. Our SAFD Certified teachers have taught in many leading actor training institutions such as:

The SAFD offers educational opportunities to all interested. Whether you are a beginner or advanced, the SAFD sponsors major workshops to fit your needs. Each summer the SAFD sponsors the National Stage Combat Workshop in Las Vegas as well as two workshops at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

The SAFD/NSCW is seeking donations of old computers and stage combat related materials (i.e., weapons, etc.).

  • No renumeration will be given for these donations. However a tax deductible receipt for their listed worth will be available. All donations should be sent to Linda McCollum at UNLV. For further info please contact Dale Girard.

Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Award.

  • The Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Award is a grant which provides full tuition and housing for an SAFD member to attend the NSCW (excluding the TTW).

1. Who are we?

  • The Society of American Fight Directors is a non-profit organization of theatre professionals, academicians, friends and supporters, all of whom share a common interest in the art of stage violence.

2. What do we do?

  • The SAFD is dedicated to training and improving the quality of stage combat. We are committed to the highest standards of safety in the theatrical, film, and television industries. The SAFD offers educational opportunities across the country at universities, privately, and at the annual National Stage Combat Workshop expressly to disseminate this information.

3. How long have we been around?

  • The SAFD was founded on May 16, 1977.
